Our class, with Mrs. Todd’s class, ekevrated the end of the year with one last “buddy read!” Mrs. Todd’s class shared with us their non-fiction books and the students talked about text features! Our reading and writing units go hand in hand right now as we learn about non-fiction texts. The students learned about some text features that non-fiction books may have. Below, they are looking for a Table of Contents (or "Contents"). The students learned to add labels to their pictures in their non-fiction books, and here, they are looking for labels in the non-fiction books they chose for their book boxes. In pairs, the students explored which 3-D shapes can roll, stack, and slide. Then, as a group, we began talking about which characteristic(s) allows a shape to move in a certain way. April is Autism Acceptance month! First, we read a book called Uniquely Wired, about a boy with Autism. We also learned about autism from some of our peers at Addams through a powerpoint presentation they created! Then, we talked about what we can do to be kind to someone with autism. Throughout the month, the students were VERY generous by bringing in a LOT of coins and the kindergarteners WON! We were the first grade level to reach 59 POUNDS of coins. We celebrated with an ice cream party! Students sorted by color, size, shape, number of sides, and more! The students used bookmarks to identify where they made a connection while reading and had conversations about their connection with their partners. Three wonderful role models from the Royal Oak High School basketball team read Salt in His Shoes, a book about Michael Jordan to our class! We talked about the book’s theme: perseverance, hard work, and determination and the author’s message: Never give up and keep reaching for your dreams! I ordered new LEGO sets to add to our play time centers! However, the children had to earn them by showing OAKS behavior in the hallway, while lining up, and during transitions. And, they did it! They can play by themselves or with a partner, and they can build their own creations or use the LEGO booklet and follow step by step directions. Here are a few photos of the kids enjoying the LEGOS! Each child received one of the following: a teen number, a pair of addends 10 + x, a ten frame showing 10, or a ten frame showing another number. They worked together to get into groups of 4 to show different teen numbers. |
