Instead of having book bins at each table for kids to share, the students have learned how to go "book shopping" and get books for their own book boxes. Now, the kids are able to spread out throughout the room and cuddle up with a good book!
The students began composing numbers greater than 5 as "5 and __ more" by using individual tiles and 5-frames (a set of 5 tiles attached to each other). On the second day, the students practiced saying the sets that join together to make the larger set. For example, "9 is 5 and 4," or "7 is 5 plus 2." The students pointed to the numbers to help guide their oral equations. During our unit on "Animals 2 by 2," the students began learning about red worms! They will later compare/contrast red worms and earthworms, but first they observed red worms very carefully! Take a look below! Children were invited to hold the worms if they wanted to, but this was a personal choice and children were not forced to hold or touch the worms. |
