I invited the children to spread out throughout the room during independent reading. They did a fantastic job at finding their own reading spot and worked on reading for an extended period of time!

In Reading Workshop, the students learned about different ways to think about the books they read. One thing that good readers do is make text to self connections while they read. This is described as thinking about your own life and trying to relate to the characters or other parts of a story. The chi,Daren out a post-it note on a page if they made a connection.
The students began learning about 5 as an anchor number and created numbers greater than 5 by using a 5-frame. They then tried to create an equation using the appropriate symbols + and =. I encouraged the students to "read" their equation. It's important to note that the students are gaining experiences with the sum on both the left and right side of the equation. Too often, students see the sum on the right side of the equation and begin to mistakenly think that the = means "the answer." It's important to stress that = means "is the same as," and we will continue to work on this throughout the year.
