Shake 5 and Spill: Students shake 2-sided counters (red and yellow) and then determine how many of each are used to make the set of 5. For example: 3 reds and 2 yellows, 0 reds and 5 yellows, etc.
Bears in the Cave: Students played in partners with 5 plastic bears. Some bears stood on the “grass” while the rest hid under a cup in the “cave.” One student did the hiding while the other had to figure out how many were hiding and explain how they reached their answer.
