After finding a pattern in adding 1 to a group, the students explored subtracting 1 from a group. They realized that subtracting 1 is “like going backwards,” and “counting backwards.” Then, they played a game called “One Less,” in which they try to get 4 it 5 in a row on their game board after rolling a die and subtracting 1 from the number they rolled. In math, the students have been practicing adding 1 to numbers 1 through 10. I’ve encouraged them to look for the pattern that exists when adding 1, and in our class discussion, the students explained that the sum of a number and 1 is the next number in the counting sequence. Great thinking, friends! |
