One of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Kindergarten math states that children will be able to compose and decompose shapes. The children used different math materials to compose new, and often times different, shapes. The process of combining shapes to build new shapes also helps children see how a shape can be broken down (decomposed) into other shapes. Take a look at what they discovered!

The children had a lot of fun at all the centers we had set-up! Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to help, and to our room parents, Mrs. Bofferding and Mrs. Kurvi, for their help in planning and preparing everything!
Earlier this month, our reading buddies came to visit! The kindergarteners chose a couple "just right" books to read to their buddies, and their buddies read to them as well.
The students worked with manipulatives to build numbers 11-19. They used two 5-frames to show 10, then added some more. They combined 10 and the other number (representing "some more") to show the teen number. It is imperative for children to understand that the 1 in the teen numbers represents 1 group of 10, and this is a great activity to help them build that foundation!
